How does it even make sense that SPNG would short GFGU stock prior to said investment into GFGU? I would have thought that the GFGU investors would view an investment as a positive thing and the price would go up. Kinda defeats the purpose of shorting, doesn't it?

Why do you act so surprised, its the same thing RME has been doing here, so why wouldn't they plan to do the same thing with GFGU?
