Hmmmm, never really thought of it. Some islands could be deserted and also desert-ed islands with low rainfall.
These days it is an obsolete cliche. Most islands in the tropics have big tourist hotels and the only thing deserted is the library assuming they even have one.
I think cannibalism has gone out of fashion as well.
