I know I've related a lot of tales about N.D. but there's one I've held back because it proves how foolish a 19 year-old can be.
Drove from Houston to Dickinson just a few days after getting my very own car (a first) and a driver's license. Was stopped in Oklahoma, Kansas and South Dakota for various infractions, mostly speeding...but each time only received a warning ticket. Why? Well, as one officer put it...he felt sorry for me because the way I drove I'd never make it home. LOL
The most memorable part of the trip was misjudging the size of a small town in S.D. on the map - when I finally got there with my gas gauge on empty... about 2:00 a.m. there wasn't an open service station to be found. The town was so small they didn't even have a motel. I drove around a bit and finally spotted one car on the streets. Turned out to be the town constable who led me to a station whose owner he'd awakened to get me some gas.
Found out there's no honour when it comes to money...as I was charged three times the going rate!
Ah, the good ol' days! LOL
