Brett Vaughn (Brave New Film's extraordinary documentarian) and I happened upon a Republican press conference. When we approached, Representative Mike Rogers (Michigan) was expounding at length about death rates for cancer patients under "socialized medicine" vs. death rates here in the United States. Seems there is a long list of cancers in which US patients survive longer than their peers in France.
I ignored the fact that I don't believe for one second that doctors, nurses or other direct health care providers (I'm not talking about the bureaucrats at insurance companies that are paid to deny claims) base a single treatment decision on who is paying them. I also ignored the fact that anyone can cherry-pick statistics to make whatever specious case their little hearts desire. We all know that the truth is that we in America pay much more for much less when it comes to health care.
Instead I decided to ask about something that really bugs me about Republicans: for so-called patriots, these guys really think the United States sucks.
I mean, if we can engineer a ridiculously effective war machine - and spend whatever it takes to do it - why can't we figure health care out? Surely they don't believe killing people is more worthy than keeping Americans alive?
Yglesias points out that the Gang of Six negotiating the Senate Finance version of health reform all represent very small states — in fact, the combined population of their states is less than that of New Jersey.
So hey, why not let New Jersey do this instead? We can get a committee of, say, three corrupt mayors and three money-laundering rabbis to draw up a plan; it could hardly be worse than what Max Baucus has come up with.*
As we say here in the Garden State, “You got a problem with that?”
*People in the know say not to worry too much about the awfulness of the Finance proposal; the important thing is getting it out of committee, so that it can be fixed in later negotiations. I hope they’re right.
Anti-health care protesters hang freshman Democrat in effigy.
A group called “Patients First,” a project of the lobbyist-funded Americans for Prosperity, has been going around the country and hosting tea parties in opposition to “government-run health care.” Last week, they held a symposium in Salisbury, MD, and warned about the dangers of “socialized” medicine. Yesterday, some individuals decided to protest outside Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil’s office, even though he hasn’t yet come out in favor of a public option. Protesters even hung up Kratovil in effigy:
.... nothing new here - I have watched wingers shoot themselves in the foot over and over again for years, the only group of people I have ever seen that vote AGAINST their interests ... & VOTE FOR being screwed personally while sucking on the corporations tits .. . all you can do it laugh .. !! ...
