I doubt if you can ever take money out of politics, but repealing the 17th Amendment would take a giant step towards making our government work better for the people.

The authors of the Constitution deliberately set up the congress to be two separate and distinct bodies. One representing the people (House of Representatives) and the other representing state government (Senate). It is part of the checks and balances written into the Constitution.

The 17th Amendment upset the balance of power moving it to Wasington DC. Here is what one of the constitutional authors had to say about why the Senate should represent the states.

"If the state government were excluded from all agency in the national one, and all power drawn from the people at large, (both chambers voted in by the people) the consequence would be that the national government would move in the same direction as the state governments do, and would run into one great current, pursuing the same course without any opposition whatever." (John Dickinson)

That is almost exactly what has happened.

Thomas Jefferson warned against a large central government:

"When all government, domestic and foreign, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated."

Laird the vicious sadistic talibinistic wanabes and Zarqawi( with his alliance with the Saddamist remnant of the Iraq Republican guard) are causing extreme negative reaction to all Islam by those that do not know the details.
This from BBC
<<Tears and anger in Nepal papers

Nepal was shocked by the killings

The press in Nepal has been outraged by the murder of 12 Nepalese workers in Iraq.

"Inhumane, cowardly and barbaric" is how one angry paper describes the killings.

As protesters in Kathmandu ransack the city's mosque, press editorials also question whether the Nepalese government did enough to secure the release of the hostages.(picture in the link)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sheer barbarism - We strongly condemn the inhumane, cowardly and barbaric act of the Iraqi militants. It is now crystal clear that the Iraqi militants, who are waging war in the name of Islam, do not follow Islamic tenets. They are simply terrorists who have camouflaged themselves in the mask of Islam. Every country knows that Nepalese have no role in the Iraq conflict. But the bloodthirsty terrorists did not listen to the pleas of the poor.

I continue from last post.
I remind that a month ago Muqtada Al Sadr passed out a proclamation that all wanabes, Al Queda members and affiliates and all Saddamist can rightfully be killed, and said they are the enemy of Iraqis.
Here now we are heading to a big bloody mess.
Western Iraq and much of NorthWestern Iraq are in control now by the wanabes( quite a lot be foreign as their passage into Iraq via the western border via the highway that leads to Falluja and Ramada is now a free zone, there is nothing to stop them.)
The western and Northwestern regions are becoming a blend of Wanabe super fanatics and the still alive and kicking remnants of the Saddamist(most importantly the remnant of the IRG).
Iraq is now forming into what i wrote of before the war started, 3 regions that would explode into 3-sided/triangular war.
I will state flat out the wanabe/baathist alliance is an alliance of evil and one is in denial to feel they are not building in strength in the west and northwest regions of Iraq.

In my pre-war statements that Bush and Neo-Cons were walking their soldiers into an explosive hornets nest of a civil war where the U.S and its attendant allies from elsewhere would be targeted by all 3 sides.
The U.S. of course can pick a side and join with them, hey maybe they will ally themselves with the Talibinistic al Queda like fanatics and the Baathist--LOL!, then we would have sickest joke in world history; possibly.
But it is obvious the idea Allawi can create an Iraqi Security force to keep the peace and stabilize Iraq is the delusional fantasy of the the neo-cons and libs like Dreyfus, for instance.
U.S. withdraws or becomes a loose cannon killing force striking out in chaotic fashion in a manner compatible with chaos, deep deep in FUBAR( Situation F*CK UP, BEYOND ALL REPAIR)
Just killing and killing(and being killed) in the hell hole of their OWN making.
I look at my chessboard anew, play out some moves and i see no end to this.
This chess play out factors in whether Kerry or Bush wins as that will NOT change the game.
I stated before the war that this decision to invade Iraq will go down as one the most catastrophic decisions in the history of the world.
i do NOT expect to be believed.
But i feel i am seeing clearly thru a very DARK GLASS.
A very dark glass; indeed, where blackness and blood red swirl and twist to the drum beat of men insane, these being what we call the Leaders of Men.
