Nasa scans from space reveal that ice is being lost at a rate of about seven inches a year.
Thin seasonal ice is now more dominant than the older thick ice that remained there all year.
Experts believe the rapid transformation of ice cover around the North Pole is a clear indication of global warming.
The orbiting probe called ICESat - the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite - scanned the Arctic between the winters of 2004 and 2008.
Nasa scientists and a team from Seattle's Washington University examined the information gathered.
The team found that the area covered by older year-round ice shrank by 595,000 square miles - an area the size of Alaska.
