MOSCOW, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Russia's FSB security service has asked a Moscow-based journalist working for an Iranian TV channel to help negotiate the release of hundreds of children, parents and teachers held by gunmen in a Russian school, the reporter said on Thursday.
"They've told me they want me to do it. Of course, I am going to do it. I am just waiting for further instructions," the reporter, Abdallah Isa of Iran's Al-Alam television, told Reuters by telephone from the southern Russian town of Beslan, where the hostages were seized.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would do everything possible to prevent harm coming to about 350 hostages held in the school in Beslan since Wednesday morning.
It was not immediately clear why Isa should have been chosen for the task. However, officials have suggested that the gunmen have links to Chechen rebels, who are Muslim.
Earlier in the day, a well-known paediatrician, Leonid Roshal, had been in touch with the gunmen by phone but there was no word on the progress of his negotiations.
On Wednesday, the gunmen rejected attempts by a local Muslim leader to talk to them.
