"This is ridiculous, the entire Middle East can be categorized by violence and political unrest. People in the ME are driven by religious zealotism. Just as we categorize ourselves as Democrats/Republicans, they categorize themselves based on different sects of Islam."

That statement struck me as odd too, ta, because these days Islam seems anything but peaceful. Then I thought about it, and the reality is Islam has always been "under siege" by the west for hundreds of years, and the reason has been protection of oil interests.

At the risk of trivializing 9/11 which is absolutely not my intent, look at the effect ONE 9/11 has had on this country. Imagine the effect of a couple hundred years of bombings, military offensives, slaughter, and an untold number of coups, both overt and covert. Under those conditions, I don't know that we would not become an angry violent society as well. Many around the world do view us as an angry, violent culture. Agree or disagree, we are seeing an angry Christianity arise in this country, imo. It is certainly angrier than anything I've experienced in my lifetime.

To understand any global event, it must be understood within it's historical context.
