F6. Good points. I did read the one where the guy was in an auto accident and lost his business and home etc. and I'm sure some of these things happen, but many times to the fault of the victim. Not knocking the article, but was the victim asked why...
1. Why didn't he set up his business under a corporation where his company couldn't be touched if he had personal financial problems. Incorporating can be done for 500 dollars or less and he wouldn't have lost a spoon much less his business. Did the guy think about a slight bit of planning when he had a business with 25 employees? I feel sorry for him, but he did both his family and employees a disservice by not using common sense to protect them.
Anyone with any business sense at all knows to use this type of protection which works both ways. The business can go broke and if it's incorporated the family finances can't be touched. The family can have a disaster and if the business is incorporated, the business can't be touched. That's bus 101 amd anyone that doesn't know those elementary principles shouldn't be in business for himself.
In a bankruptcy, especially those that occurred before guys like VP Biden helped pass more stringent bankruptcy laws only a couple of years ago, no one loses his home, vehicle, personal items, furniture, clothing and as a matter of fact, pre Biden "not blaming all on Biden other than he was a more stringent bankruptcy supporter" very few people lost much of anything from a bankruptcy. Anyone that had cash in the bank gets rid of that fairly quickly so with minimal planning they don't even lose that. Course they claim they do.
Subsequently the bankruptcy laws became a bit tougher and if one bought a boat for 20 grand, previously he would most likely keep it where now he would have to give the boat back. Bankruptcy is a blessing to the party declaring bankruptcy because he sheds the debt. Many are happy they can shed their obligations, whether medical or otherwise and are thankful for the option which can be a lifesaver in disquise. Contrary to many reports, most don't lose everything they've made in life due to bankruptcy. Bankruptcy was designed to protect these very type of people and keep them from losing everything they've earned.
In the subsequent post that Step posted where the guy found he had only 150000 of coverage all I can say is where was the guys head? Did he look to see whether he had a major medical with unlimited coverage or did he go with a cheap supplement such as afflac that doesn't cover much of anything because the policy was cheap?
In that regard, you might have seen just lately a company that is advertizing economical health coverage on tv, I think for about 6 bucks per day for a single and 18 or so a day for a family and gives a url link. Look the site up and they offer much of nothing similar to aarp that offers 100 a day for the first 5 days of intensive care that very few qualify for anyway. Basically many of these horror stories are from the victims own making and I can reasonably say, you cannot protect people from their own ignorance.
Now all that being said, I know F6 am Step will disagree and I'm sure it's not as simple as I've projected, but we have to be careful buying into the horror stories. You get the type of health coverage you pay for and if you're uncertain what you're getting, you better get it to an attorney and let him go over this valuable coverage before you begin to depend on what you don't know you don't have.
This is what I believe. Those that have insurance don't need help other than being a bit more diligent in what kind of coverage they have. Something however needs to be done for people that are in small business or are employed by small business that have pre existing conditions that private companies refuse to insure. These are the people that need help. People with medicare and the poor with medicaid, I believe aren't the ones the public health care proposal is designed to help other than a source of cutting benefits to spread to those that are uninsured and the result I'm afraid may not give adequate coverage to any of the three groups.
That being said, I applaud those few senators and representatives that are truly concerned about health care and aren't indebted to the lobyists as I'm afraid many are, both demos and repubs who are only interested in getting by enough to get reelected. I'm afraid the last group will control the day and we'll all wind up with expensive crap.
I will say F6 and Steph, you're right in your thinking and it's not as simple as I pretend and I compliment you both for your research and knowledge that quite frankly I admit that I don't have and I will look forward in the coming days in doing a bit more reading the sources that I see you guys have delved into. It is a good cause and it is important that a solution comes this time around as it may be years before the window opens again if nothing is done this time.
I can't answer any posts tonight as unfortunately I've squandered all my free posts "I'm a medicaid poster" for the day. Keep up the good work because I think you are on the right track despite those like myself who are rooted in their own biased blessed opinions. I could be wrong about all of this. .. mo. .. nic
