Major Earthquake Shakes New Zealand's Southern Island 11 minutes ago (RTTNews) - An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale off the coast of New Zealand's South Island shook the island Wednesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The US Geological Survey said the undersea quake struck some 95 miles north west of the country's most southern city of Invercargill at 9.22 p.m. local time. The agency added that the first quake was followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock that hit the same region after a gap of 20 minutes.
The epicenter of the first quake was measured at some 150 miles off the coast of New Zealand's South Island, at a depth of 33km. Though a tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand as a precaution shortly after the initial quake, it was canceled about one and half hours later.
Meanwhile, authorities in New Zealand said that the quake was centered in the remote and unpopulated Fiordland region, indicating no reports of causalities.
Local reports said that the quake lasted for almost a minute and was felt across New Zealand's South Island. The quake also disrupted power supply in certain parts of the region and damaged several buildings.
Earthquakes are common in New Zealand, which is located between the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates. Though scientists in the geologically active country record around 14,000 earthquakes a year, only about 150 are felt by residents and fewer than 10 cause any damage.
