US dollar will remain the index currency for now. Any change won't happen overnight, but it may very well happen behind our back.
I would suspect that a country like China has enough weight to open exchange markets outside of the current dollar dominated central system of exchange. So, countries like south america, africa, asia who are becoming economic powers by mass effect are likely to steal the light away from the USD, even the EUR some day.
