AVI BioPharma says it will get up to $5.1M from government to work on swine flu treatments

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. says it will receive up to $5.1 million under a contract with the U.S. government to develop swine flu drugs.

AVI disclosed May 5 that it entered into the contract with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a section of the Department of Defense that focuses on chemical, biological, nuclear and other weapons. Under the contract, AVI will conduct preclinical development of at least one drug candidate and demonstrate it is effective by testing it on animals.

The company said it will analyze the swine flu to determine the most promising potential drugs, and make enough material to perform its tests.
