Um, did I read that right? Salt marsh hay? I haven't seen that around for a while.

Anyway, with either straw or regular hay (grass, alfalfa, timothy) you can go right up against the plants themselves without a problem. It will flatten itself out in time, so if it's a little deep to start with, don't worry.

If what you bought is truly salt marsh hay, and not just grass hay or regular marsh hay, there may actually be some salt content there. That wouldn't be so hot for your plants, although it would be hell on the weeds.

I could be wrong there, but maybe you could check with someone at the local county agriculture dept. just to make sure first....
