jbog, imo, we are not going to be able to "support our current standard of living" for many years. This seems like something that most people don't understand yet or believe will eventually happen over a longer term, but I feel it will play out until we get control of our cost structures and national debt/medicare/medicaid/social security/etc. I'm not sure what the ultimate solutions will be other than the unwinding of all these underwater assets/business.

OT jbog

Those items will assist our internal cost structures but we're at a point that we have to support our current standard of living. None of those items will help.

I'm not sure why you say that. Clean tech will not only reduce overall cost but will also create jobs. If we also come up with a more efficient high mileage vehicle technology our exports would also go up again leading to lower unemployment. Lower unemployment leads to improved standard of living for all.

WRT healthcare, if costs do come down as expected then more companies would be tempted to hire workers which would again decrease unemployment. On the other hand if taxes go up then any savings would be moot.

The economic growth will probably be slow but it should be a lot more sustainable than growth built on easy credit.
