It is a new word for cocktail party. The political correctness police determined a few years ago that the term cocktail party inferred that drinking cocktails was main focus of the gathering and that was inappropriate. They decided on mixer because it highlighted the mingling or mixing of individuals in a casual atmosphere...with lots of booze.
