Sun writes many of its own drivers, including any that are missing.
Sometimes it's helpful to control the hardware and the software.
Sun will ship a production X86-64 OS ahead of Microsoft, for that reason.
Itanium is doomed, for the same reason. Particularly since Intel couldn't manage to copy all of AMD64, driver writers will be too busy patching things for iAMD64 to do anything more than wave goodbye to Itanium.
