"Mozy, would you please tell us a bit more about the news that came out yesterday. As a non-geek, I am woefully ignorant as to how the IT world works. Although I do use social networks in my profession, I believe it's a much bigger deal in the realm of IT"

Plunderingpete... Excellent Question there..

In the IT realm, the social network is exactly that – a network. It’s the perfect place to discuss and share information & experiences. I actually was persuaded into joining the Twitter Network by some of the finest Senior Level IT. It’s all a matter of how you utilize the network. “Word of Mouth” Advertising is the most cost effective way & effective approach in delivering a message. To utilize a very large social network, such as Twitter or Facebook is a very good marketing strategy. Once people hear something great & exciting happening, the news spreads like wild fire with a single push of a button (Enter Key) to anyone on your network & the network of your followers. The key is to get the general public to know who you are – Brand Awareness. Good or Bad Reviews, the point is that someone out there has heard of you. In the case of Exobox, we are hoping for 92%+ Great Reviews, over 1million hits on the Google Search Engine – keyword: “Exobox” & to be the talked about topic towards the next century!

A month ago, Exobox only had about 19 followers on Twitter. Today they have 119 followers. The number will grow. As far as Facebook is concerned, Exobox is using a whole different approach, as it is basically a comment box to report suspicion of data leaks, which essentially leads to possible customers through follow-up & presenting the Exobox Solution to eradicate the problem. Think of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. as a Search Engine to get millions of people to know who you are. Just like the traditional method of marketing, these tools will help generate Brand Awareness & Traffic to the Exobox Site. The average Joe doesn't know or will remain skeptical about a product, unless they hear a SOLID, GREAT Review from a Peer - someone whom they trust. Twitter & Facebook are great examples of just that - communication between Peers.

With everything I’ve said so far, all is great, but to put Exobox on the “MAP”, Exobox will also need the Reviews of IT Security Evaluators, such as Gartner. If not a Gartner Review, then a Government Contract Announcement will make this investment really blow up. First things first, we need a product release!! Believe me, when that day comes and Reviews turn out to exceed or smoke the competition, news through every media outlet & social network will spread like a viral infection that not even CDC can control or stop it.

So what do IT discuss or blog about? Keep in mind that I’m still considered a Junior Level Techie at this point. My network is also quite small (for now). =) NOTE: We do have a life and do not always discuss about IT related topics (only about 30% is IT related). Here's some REAL samples of what we've discussed about through my Twitter Account:
