i dont know the reporting clearing rules:

why is this possible:

there is nothing proventing me from selling those same 1000 shares of XYZ

doesnt the broker of the borrowed shares, where the real shares are living, put a little sign on the account that says "borrowed"

on the other hand, you are completely right: you certainly could sell your own shares

That is nothing. Go try to figure how a stock with an OS of 11 and a float of 1 can have 138,000 shares traded in 4 days!
