because we allow a company like Alexion charge 450k a year for a drug that cost the company less than 20 million to develop.

because cancer drugs cost 50 to 100k a year to increase lifespan by weeks, and most of the time increases toxicity.

The point of the article from The Atlantic is that these effects, unhelpful as they may be, are tiny in the overall scheme of things.

drugs make it a rather small percentage of healthcare costs, i think around 14%.

They more than make up for their costs by keeping people out f the hospital, even when you factor in the end of life expensive treatments.

the costs of drugs is a small drop in the bucket and the costs of cancer drugs is an even smaller drop within the drop.
