Like I said, those financial companies were ponzi scams. They had little real capital of their own, compared to the leverage. Their survival hinged upon stock price, like a ponzi scam.
For comparison, the stock price of MSFT and INTC can go to 10cents over night, and the companies would still function just fine; in fact, anyone silly enough to drive their stocks down to 10cents will just make the two companies much more profitable as they would be able to scoop up shares cheaply to satisfy future employee stock option needs.
