I agree the consumer side of K8 is seeing lots of socket trasitions and that is a "bad thing".

But comparing Opteron to IPF there is no difference, they both are on one socket and will sometime down the road switch to another socket.

ROFL. All IPF products have used the same socket and FSB
for over two years now.


I don't know what it covers, but I was under the impression that socket changed from Merced to McKinley. And there needs to be change in either Xeon or Itanium to have a common platform.

The AMD Hammer family has three
different sockets in less than a year.


That's not so good for AMD K8 line in general, but the server line is likely to say with Socket 940 for now (no change of socket on the horizon).
