ribavirin efficacy no one knows if ribavirin will "work its magic" (i.e. inhibit relapse) in the absence of interferon since it has never been studied imo the fact ribavirin has efficacy in the replicon in conjunction wth some direct acting antivirals suggests there is a possibility it may work in the absence of interferon.I am not sure if there is any in vivo data (animal models) looking at non-interferon containing regimens with ribavirin in the mix
regardless, i guess it all boils down to do you think adding interferon (or interferon plus riba if the latter doesn't do much without the former) will add any meaningful increase to SVR on top of a combination of an interferon-less regimen? (the answer may be different for naives and treatment experienced patients)
i too think decreasing AE profile is more apt to consider rather than simply eliminating an injectable drug in light of the fact zgen seems to have a very tolerable interferon and we know AEs of oral agents (e.g. telaprevir) may be substantial
