That may well be true in practice. But suppose for the sake of discussion that someone were willing to pay GE a reasonable price for the portion of GECC that is not needed to finance turbines and jet engines. Under such a scenario, should GE divest the rest of GECC?

I’m inclined to say that they should do it, thereby adopting the model of BA, CAT, and DE, which have large finance operations that lend only to dealers and end-users of the companies’ industrial products.
