Elmer, gold doesn't produce anything. It is just a hedge against inflation. Ideally the value should indeed stay flat when you account for inflation.
The fact that inflation has been relatively low for the past 30 years has helped to depress the value of gold, as investors decided that most other low-risk investment vehicles gave greater returns.
