This is true, but the Devil's Advocate would say you had the expansion of cars, trucks, roads, telephones, TV, radio, airplane, monster factory technological improvements -- all of these INNOVATIONS lead to monster increases in production, trade, & cost savings allowing for enormous economic gain.

Now that our economy is so huge and we produce things so efficiently, it's much harder to innovate means of production and transportation at those paces of gains unless we invent magic, teleportation, or..... extremely cheap energy (like 25 cents a gallon). Until then we'll never realistically get the growth of the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
