Regarding the checks last spring.. it was pointed out how the timing of those checks corresponded to the huge increase in energy, particularly gas and diesel... how much of those checks just went back to the oil companies...

I referred to targeted tax cuts to stimulate spending in industries hardest hit -- autos and housing. Likewise, I said I did not support tax cuts or spending for the sake of tax cuts or spending, but that the tax code could effectively be used to stimulate spending. Surely, autos and housing are industries that could benefit from incentive to spending -- with the added benefit of improved energy efficiency... Recessions have a large psychological component as well. People who still have cash stop spending, and it spirals downward...
