Only the most partisan and fanatic of AMD camp followers fail to notice the long and consistent track record of its actual results falling far short of AMD's hopes, dreams, and business plans. Yeah sure losing billions and engaging in self-mutilation was the big strategic plan all along.
> A central part in the Foundry Company's strategy > will be volume.
Contrary to what all the AMD bashers have been saying and I have.
Do you stick to this prediction (with charming racist undertones), which is what we've been "bashing"?
Arab mentality is pride orientated. If they have Fabs they will want them completely filled so they can brag about how many processors they are shipping. This will be far more dangerous to Intel than any of the effects you describe. Intel's margins could end up like roadkill as a result. You really haven't seen anything yet if you think marketshare pushes are now over. AMD is their new toy and they will want to play ! http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=32766106
You claim that TFC is going to fill both fab 36 and fab 38 (and even implied fab 40 in that thread) with AMD parts, and then convert wafer lines as external customers came on line. Your whole argument has been that TFC is going to "bury" Intel with two or more 300mm fabs cranking out x86 processors. We've argued that this is not TFC's strategy, which is backed up by the roadmaps, statements from executives, and the small CapEx commitment, but which somehow still seems to have escaped your notice.
The reality is one fab dedicated to AMD and another ramping different flavors of processes to be sold on the open market* isn't high volume in the market TFC is entering. How many fabs does TSMC have? 8, plus one through a wholly-owned subsidiary. UMC has 10, Chartered has 5, SMIC has 7 (3 of which are 300mm plants). Volume in both fabs is key, but TFC is going to be a minor force at best with the capacity of 1 300mm fab already spoken for (and losing money today) and only 1 300mm fab to use for new customer foundry work for the next 3 years.
Meanwhile TSMC will probably swing to a loss in Q4; the rest listed above are already in the red even as the teeth of this recession are just starting to bite down. Hard to see TFC making money in the foreseeable future. This is not a good time to be entering an already highly competitive foundry market.

*David Wu - Global Crown So basically, in Dresden, we got one SOI fab and one bulk sea Moss [sic] fab?
