Search 1952, for example: The top Federal tax rate is 92% on everything over $200,000 in taxable income.

Note: Ingmar Bergman very publicly gave up his Swedish citizenship when he found his marginal tax rate exceeded 100%. (I know that isn't the U. S., but as Dew said, it can and has happened. Not all states allow a deduction for Federal taxes.)
