simple, a lot of what you write is correct, but electrical stimulation of the nervous system is an avenue which is less problematic in my opinion then drugs. I would have preferred a non contact approach (the reasoning for my failed attempt at forming Thiktilos few years back and wasting quite a lot of valuable resources on it too). However, on the other side, one should remember that heart pacers have been around for the last 25 years and there have not been major epidemics of problems associated with that. I would accept your criticism if it was directed to the Medtronics devices that are implanted in the brain (targeting the pituitary gland, if memory serves) for Parkinson, but the Vagus nerve is far from the brain itself, so I think it might be useful after all. I believe that in time, electrical stimulation of nerves will obviate the need for drug anesthesia as well well, and the morbidity with anesthesia is actually quite high (from memory 1% much too much). A non invasive electrical stimulation approach would be much better and with fewer systemic effects.
And as I was writing and correctng this disertation, gotten back in CYBX at $36.80 and seconds in MAGS at $17.40.
