You know, I'm very glad you asked that! AMD and Intel have been going at it mano a mano for many, many years. Intel still owns over 80% of the PC space, even after all that battle.

Now, don't get me wrong ... AMD is a scrappy company and has had some real succeses. Of recent note is their earlier entry into the 64-bit computing space with their 64-bit extensions devices. Still, the infrastructure isn't quite ready yet for 64-bit computing. Once MS has Windows out for the devices and key apps are ported, the launch will begin. Of course, Intel will be there with both feet by then.

So, to answer your question: No, I don't think AMD will make a significant dent, but I hope they can maintain their new-found profitability. I think it is important to Intel to have a viable competitor in the space to both drive them (avoid complacency) and to fend off the antitrust wolves.
