Dynamic Positioning is a computer controlled system that uses thrusters and propellers without anchors to automatically hold a vessel position and heading.
The desired position and heading is set by the Captain. The ability to hold the vessel is achieved through the use of position reference sensors sensing the vessel position and a computer program comparing it to the position as set by the Captain. The DP computer then commands the thrusters to drive the vessel back to the desired position.
The Dynamic Positioning System must be interfaced to the position reference sensors and the thrusters. The minimum requirements for sensors are a DGPS receiver, wind speed and direction sensor, motion reference unit and a gyrocompass. The minimum number of thrusters includes a bow thruster, two main propulsion thrusters, and independently controlled rudders.
To install the system, the current computer must be able to command the thrusters and rudders and receive feedback to confirm their response to the commands. The computer continuously updates the command to maintain the vessel “on DP station”.
The Sta-Sys Dynamic Positioning system was designed specifically for simplicity so as to require minimal training for the Captain and Crew. Electrowave USA sells the Sta-Sys DP System for every genre vessel including yachts as an integrated system, thereby eliminating many of the interface issues that can result if different type controls and/or vendors are used. Electrowave USA will work closely with the owner and shipyard to ensure that are properly installed and operational the systems The ElectroWave USA Sta-Sys system is currently available as a DP-0 or DP-1 system. DP-2 is currently in development for Electrowave USA customers
