The Antichrist

By Grant R. Jeffrey 1998
(A long post, but yours was long too :)

Though we are often unaware of the spiritual warfare going on around us, from the time of Satan's rebellion against God this spiritual battle has affected every life on earth. Satan's emissary, the antichrist, will ultimately do battle with Jesus Christ in the last day's to put an end to the war against good and evil. This antichrist will be a liar and a deceiver because he is Satan's tool (see 1Jn.2:22). Some suggest that he may be a Jew who is either a eunuch or a homosexual since Daniel warned that he would have no regard for "the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women" (11:3). Both the OT and NT use various names and titles to describe this satanic deceiver's career, nature and ultimate defeat by the Messiah.

The Antichrist in the Old Testament

Satan's Seed ~ The Bible's first prophecy describes the antichrist as Satan's seed because he will attempt to do the will of his father, Satan, the father of all lies. (see Ge 3:15; Jn 8:44).

The King of Babylon ~ He is called the "king of Babylon" (Isa 14:4) because he will make the rebuilt city of Babylon one of his capitals during his brief reign.

Prince of Tyrus ~ Ezekiel called the antichrist the "prince of Tyrus" (Eze 28:2) declaring that though he would be possessed by Satan, he was still a man and not a god. The antichrist will exalt himself to be worshiped, exactly as Satan wanted the worship of the fallen angels.

The Little Horn ~ Daniel call him a "little horn" (7:8) in contrast to the ten horns that represent ten nations arising out of the revived Roman empire. Endowed with satanic powers, he will be a powerful speaker, able to impress people with his brilliant speech.

A King Of Fierce Countenance ~ The antichrist will be "a king of fierce countenance" (8:23), a leader with a striking appearance and great charisma.

The Prince That Shall Come ~ Daniel 9:26 says that a people would come to destroy Jerusalem and the temple. The Romans fulfilled this prophecy in A.D. 70. Therefore the "prince that shall come" (9:26) will come from the revived Roman empire.

The Willful King ~ Jesus came to do his Father's will (see Lk:2:49). In total contrast, the antichrist will "do according to his will" (Da 11:36).

The Assyrian ~ Prior to 608 B.C. an ancient Assyria occupied the same geographic area as Babylon. Isaiah's words may identify the antichrist as "the Assyrian" (Isa 10:24) because of his future role in Babylon.

The Idol Shepherd ~ The antichrist is called the "idol shepherd" (Zec 11:17) because his purpose is to use, abandon and destroy God's flock for Satan's benefit. This title may also be applied to the antichrist because he will make an image of himself in the rebuilt temple and require people to worship it (see Rev 13:14-15).

The Spoiler and the Extortioner ~ Isaiah describes the antichrist as "the spoiler" and "the extortioner" (Isa 16:4) because he will attempt to destroy all who resist his claims to be a god while using coercion to gain great riches.

The Wicked ~ The apostle Paul describes the antichrist as "that Wicked" (2Th 2:8) because he will give himself entirely to Satan's evil designs to destroy God's people and purposes.

The Antichrist in the New Testament

The Man of Sin `~ Paul tells us that the antichrist will not appear until there has been a falling away first. Then "that man of sin" (2Th 2:3) will be revealed after God has removed his restraining Spirit (see 2Th 2:6-7).

The Son of Perdition ~ Paul calls the antichrist "the son of perdition" (2 Th 2:3) because the antichrist is destined to destroy and be destroyed by God. Judas Iscariot was also referred to by this name (see Jn 17:12).

Antichrist ~ The title "antichrist" (1Jn 2:18) is the most common one used to describe this last enemy of humanity. The antichrist will appear to emulate Jesus but will be a counterfeit.

The First Beast ~ The antichrist is identified as "the beast" (Rev 11:7) that rises "up out of the sea" (Rev 13:1). The sea usually depicts Gentile nations so this title indicates the antichrist's power within the ten-nation kingdom.

The One Who Comes in His Own Name ~ Though people rejected Jesus' claim to be the Messiah who came in the name of his Father, the Jews will one day accept the antichrist who "shall come in his own name" (Jn 5:43).

The Defilement of the Temple

Daniel and Paul both mention the defilement of the rebuilt temple when the antichrist will enter the Holy of Holies (see 9:27; 2Th 2:4). What he will do there is uncertain, but this act will surely qualify as "the abomination of desolation" (Mt 24:15) that Jesus warned his disciples to flee (see Mt24:15-17). God's wrath will be instantly poured out when the antichrist defiles the temple half way through the seven-year treaty period. This will usher in the final great tribulation.

Many Jews will recognize that the antichrist is the false Messiah when he defiles the temple. As these Jews rebel, Satan will empower the antichrist to supernaturally fight the righteous and attack Israel as she flees into the wilderness seeking God's power and protection (see Rev 12:17).

The Worship of the Antichrist

The antichrist will suffer a deadly wound but will be miraculously healed and restored (see Rev 13:12-13). After this miracle, the false prophet will convince the world that the antichrist is the long-awaited Messiah. The false prophet will force everyone under the jurisdiction of his world government to worship the antichrist. From that point on it will be a spiritual and physical warfare for three and a half years for those who choose to serve God.

The Destruction of the Antichrist

In the final years of the tribulation the kings of the east will mobilize a vast army to rebel against the tyranny of the antichrist (see Rev 9:16). They will march across Asia killing one third of humanity as they move toward Armageddon (see Rev 9:18). When they approach the Euphrates River it will dry up to allow their army to march across its dry riverbed to the final Battle of Armageddon (see Rev 9:14-15; 16:12).

When the enormous armies of the kings of the east, north, south and the ten-nation federation of the antichrist join battle, Jesus Christ will descend with his heavenly army of saints to defeat the antichrist and his allies (see Rev 19:19-21). The antichrist and the false prophet will be thrown into the lake of fire, while the sword of the Lord will kill their allies. A remnant of the antichrist's armies will escape and invade Jerusalem a few days later, taking the population captive. Jesus will descend to Jerusalem to destroy the last of the wicked armies and save all of the Jews who repent (see Zec 12:8-11; 14:1-5). Christ will then enter the rebuilt temple through the newly opened eastern gate and usher in the millennial kingdom (see Eze 43:1-5).
