"think he means by "It's a conversation [topic]."

He means, no real demand and need for the product, that he can see from his dell installations.

SmallPops: He says that a lot of Dell customers are asking Dell about Opterons. That is very revealing in and of itself.

He then goes on to say that some of those customers are buying Itanium.

But what about the remainder of the "lot". They cannot buy Opterons from Dell.

Re: A lot of accounts are asking us [about Opteron], but we've seen only a handful of accounts buying Opteron

This idiot probably doesn't see a lot of accounts buying bass boats, either. His conclusion is that no one is selling bass boats.

Unless he sells a product, how does he expect to know whether or not his customers are getting them somewhere else? Does he expect everyone who buys a new lawn tractor to call up their Dell rep and fill them in on the details?

How many other products that Dell clearly doesn't carry are a lot of their accounts asking about, anyway?

One look at the giant "64" on Dell's home page will tell you what's going on. It's linked to a whitepaper begging Dell customers to wait for Intel's rushed half copy of Opteron to be ready.

Dell's sweating blood over what Opteron is doing to the loyalty of their customer base.
