Russian natural gas monopoly Gazprom is ready to supply Mexico with gas condensate and to invest funds in the development of gas deposits in the Gulf of Mexico. This information came from Valery Yazev, president of the Russian Gas Association.

The announcement seems to be a response to a statement by Mexico’s President Vicente Fox, who said that his country could become a major importer of Russian gas despite its geographical remoteness from Russia.

Vicente Fox spoke to reporters on eve of President Putin’s visit to Mexico, and his words were reported by Itar-Tass news agency. The Mexican president also said that his country is interested in investing in the gas sector and could make strategic alliances with Russia in the energy field.

According to Yazev “during the first stage [of trade] the condensed gas will be transported [to Mexico] by foreign companies because Russia is lagging behind Japan, Finland and the United States in the area of tanker construction”. But the Russian official expressed a hope that in the future Russian tankers will enter this “dynamic market”. Yazev also said that within 10 to 15 years Russia may be able to refine and produce up to 50 million tons of gas condensate.

The president of the Russian Gas Association also gave some details of large scale projects to transport Russian gas condensate to the American continent. The first one is a joint project between Gazprom and ConocoPhillips to construct a gas refinery with an annual output of 20 million tons of condensate on the polar Kola peninsula. Yazev also said that Gazprom is holding talks with Petro Canada about production of condensed gas extracted in Western Siberia and its future transportation to Canada across the Bering Strait.
