A custodian at the Christian school George Fox University found an effigy of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama hanging from a tree on campus on Tuesday [9/23], University President Robin Baker told The Associated Press.
University spokesperson Rob Felton said the figure hung from the branch of the tree with fishing line around its neck, an image that recalls lynching of Blacks and Latinos, outraging students and school administrators alike.
Taped to the cardboard cutout of Obama was a message targeting participants in Act Six, a scholarship program intended to increase the number of Black, Latino and low-income students at several Christian colleges, mostly in the Northwest. The message read "Act Six reject," according to the article.
It is ironic that such an effigy would be hung at George Fox University, a school founded by Quaker pioneers in 1891. (Quakers opposed slavery.) "It has been my dream to establish a university that more adequately represents the kingdom of God," said Baker at a school assembly, according to the article. "This act causes some to question our commitment."

NEWBERG, Ore. — George Fox University says four students have been punished for hanging a likeness of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama from a tree on campus.
The university said in a statement today the penalties are "immediate long-term suspension and public service." The school says the four confessed to their involvement.
It says federal privacy rules prevent it from disclosing the length of the suspensions or the names of the students.
The life-size cardboard cutout, a commercial product, was hung last week with fishing line around the neck.
An official of the Christian school of about 1,800 students called the image of a black man hanged from a tree one of the most hurtful symbols of racism in American history.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The FBI says it is investigating an act of vandalism that occurred at a Barack Obama campaign office in Gresham.
According to authorities, campaign staff members discovered a swastika and racial epithet drawn on the office window Sept. 17 where an Obama poster appeared.
The FBI is also investigating another incident on a university campus outside Portland, where a cardboard cutout of Obama was found hanging from a tree.
The commercially produced image of the Illinois senator was discovered last Tuesday on the Newberg campus of George Fox University. The FBI is looking into any possible civil rights violations.
FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele wouldn't speculate as to whether the two incidents are related.
