OT: FEMA aid?

Wow. That's truly amazing. I, of course, hope for the best for you personally, but globally speaking, it seems to me the federal treasury would be broken if everyone who went 5 days without essential services in past hurricanes had been given government handouts.

It makes me wonder whether our apparently increasingly socialist government has been expanding benefits and entitlements more with every passing year.

Can you imagine where we'd be today if, for the first 150 years of our country's existence we doled out handouts to everyone who suffered through a period with no air conditioning, electricity, government water and sewer services? Oh, right, once upon a time, people didn't used to feel entitled to have someone give them "compensation" for every misfortune or inconvenience.

I suppose I should be disappointed that I didn't go snatch up a slice of the pie for the half dozen times I've been without electricity and essential services for between 5 days and 6 weeks. Somehow, though, I'm just as happy knowing I didn't stick somebody's kids with the national credit card bill. I and the other hundreds of thousands in the locality managed through just fine, helping each other, helping ourselves, and taking life as it came, most of us richer for the experience, pain in the butt though it was. Never occurred to me I ought to think about being entitled to a handout. Glad it never did. Ain't the kind of mindset I'd want to go through life with.
