Bank of America upgrades to 'buy'

LOS ANGELES (CBS.MW) - Shares of Siebel Systems moved higher Wednesday, taking a boost from an upgrade and bullish comments by Banc of America Securities. Siebel (SEBL: news, chart, profile) shares spiked by as much as 5 percent in early trade after analyst Hari Srinivasan upgraded the stock to "buy" with a $14 price target from a prior "neutral". However, the shares gave back the bulk of their early gains by midmorning. In recent trading, Siebel shares stood just over 1 percent higher at $10.87. Siebel shares are at an inflection point and are poised to turn in steady growth from current trading levels, according to the analyst. The stock's unjustifiably low valuation provides a good point for investors to move into the stock, Srinivasan said. "While the turnaround may take a few quarters and may result in a few management changes, current valuations appear too compelling to ignore," Srinivasan said in a note to clients. The San Mateo, Calif.-based maker of customer relationship management software is enjoying an improvement in demand for its core software amid bigger deals and stabilizing prices, according to the analyst. Demand for application software is gradually improving as the economy recovers. The analyst was also upbeat on Siebel's recently-appointed chief executive, Mike Lawrie, who was tapped last month to replace company founder Tom Siebel in the top position. Lawrie is "the right medicine" for Siebel, according to the analyst, who said the new CEO has what it takes to boost employee morale and customer satisfaction. "Net, net, we believe current valuations offer a compelling risk/reward proposition and provide investors with an excellent opportunity to buy shares of a market leader with still attractive growth prospects," the analyst said.
