Everybody knows the gov. statistics are cooked. The newspapers all across the US have noted that everything is higher in price, food, housing (that bubble everyone is talking about), gasoline, medical care (last year health insurance was up 18%, employers are increasingly cutting corners onto the workers), milk, and soon cheap manufactured goods from China. Nonetheless, the government statistics on inflation are barely moving. This isn't some controversial statement, it is known by all.
Ditto the unemployment rate. They always cite the government rate and the "true rate" not counting people who have fallen off the map.
Occasionally if one looks, there will be articles on the true inflation rate, true gdp, true unemployment, etc. It is taken for granted that the statistics put out by the US government are from a parallel universe in tenuous contact with our own.
I would find this rather unnerving myself. The old saying is GIGO, garbage in, garbage out. If one did this in biomedicine, they would be metaphorically dead, and a lot of patients would be literally dead.
