Ahead of the Bell: Analyst splits drybulk shippers
Thursday August 14, 7:52 am ET

Analyst upgrades 1 drybulk shipper and downgrades another, predicts huge uptick in stocks

NEW YORK (AP) -- A JPMorgan analyst downgraded one drybulk shipper and upgraded another Thursday, saying that Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. should benefit from near-term fleet growth while Diana Shipping Inc.'s expansion plans might be "constrained."

Analyst Jonathan B. Chappell lifted shares of Eagle to "Overweight" from "Neutral" and cut Diana to "Neutral" from "Overweight." Chappell believes that Eagle has stronger earnings and dividend growth potential than Diana, and noted the stock is also currently a better value.

He notes that dividend increases are "one of the clearest and most effective catalysts to shipping stocks."

As Eagle begins to receive 13 new ships that are scheduled to be delivered through 2009, Chappell said the company should boost its dividend more than once. He predicts Diana's dividend will decline in that period.

Overall, Chappell predicts it is time for investors to jump back in to the drybulk sector. As the closely monitored Baltic Dry Index posted its first gain in nearly a month Wednesday, he suggests that drybulk stocks have hit bottom and are poised for big gains in the fourth quarter.
