Oil shale would require the building of 12 nuclear reactors to produce between 1.5-2 mbpd. By that time US domestic production would drop by a like amount. Assuming we also exploit our other alternatives to the same tune we would get a similiar net gain. Might keep up with the rise in demand. Same net imports. The bonus is that the area does not have enough water to sustain that level of production.

What we need is our next energetic energy source- ala fusion.

We are roughly 25 to 30 years behind on starting to seriously address the problem.
