Warp, I figured that I was kind of preaching to the choir here. I read between the lines of some of AG's comments and saw that as confirmation of what most of us here already suspected and I kind of got on a tirade. Most people who are stretched thin can't find the wherewithal to have anything to do with trading stocks, hence, they aren't reading these boards.
I am the only person in my family that knows the first thing about trading (even out to aunts and uncles) and I suspect, based on family gossip, that I am the only one with a positive net worth. Not a coincidence. Even the relatives and acquaintances who a 401k just set up the allocations when the account was created and have never looked back, so they lost their asses in the bear market without ever a thought to seek out a money market fund or a bond fund or an REIT fund. So all through that I was making small gains from dividends on GNMA's while I listened to my employer complain about how everything was terrible and he had lost half his life savings. I can count on one hand the friends I have who really know what they are doing with their money.
