Oops. That wasn't a "popcorn" test. I don't see now where the customer is being required to buy the DVD if they rent it on VOD. In fact their statistics didn't seem to support it either--different pct gains for VOD and buys...So, it has NO applicability to the Popcorn TV idea which, I think is not going to go over so well.
What about those test results? Well, early VOD release may indeed boost DVD sales--it just makes sense but IMO those would be sales in the retail stores (the more that see a movie they like, the more will buy it later or elsewhere.) As such it may increase kiosk sales as well.
In any case the tests are not applicable to Popcorn TV. That concept appears to be untested.
