Doug, Re: 1. But we know that isn't true-- get real.
2. No, not all. And "up to" is the key phrase. 10% was about the median.
3. PAE = garbage.
1. AMD's Opteron ramp was off to a slow start. We already knew that, and AMD probably lowered prices to accelerate adoption. We don't know whether end users continue to perceive Intel as a more competitive solution, or not. If you were to "get real" about it, you would consider the possibility that Intel still has serious mind share in the server segment, and the release of the newest 4M cache Xeon MP might be coming across more positively than you think.
2. From the Register article:
Processor Prev. Price New Price Change
Opteron 848 $3199 $1514 -52.7%
Opteron 846 $2149 $1165 -45.8%
Opteron 844 $1299 $873 -32.8%
Opteron 842 $999 $698 -30.1%
Opteron 840 $749 $698 -6.8%
The median for 800 series parts, which are the only ones pertinent to this conversation, has much greater than a 10% median. Try 34%, not to mention that the cuts were across the board. Remember that Intel has cut one sku out of 9 by 27%. That's more like a 3% median across the Xeon MP line. Even if you only consider the 4 most active skus at this point, the median price cut is about 7%, far less significant than AMD's.
3. PAE is not as elegant as 64-bits, but that's not the point. It is supported by the major software and operating systems, and it's well entrenched. AMD64 is neither, so the argument is moot.
