3 phase power is common on ships for winch motors etc. Single phase motors have trouble starting under heavy loads and they need capacitors and a relay to give them the kick they need. 3 phase is a better power for large motors, and industrial equipment (welders, presses, plasma cutter). It operates at a lower cost and the motors are more reliable. 3 phase was mentioned in one of the original filings in 2006. (if it's important to them, it's important to me)
