"In the Bible, Jesus tells his followers to leave their wifes and children for him....

Dessert their families and leave them high and dry.

too funny"

Perhaps you would be kind enough to furnish the verse to which you are referring?

I don't understand the need to denigrate the faith of others, but certainly understand how hard the Bible can be to understand for even believers. For anyone who thinks of Jesus as just another man, the Bible is even more unintelligible.

I believe any passage in which Jesus instructs someone to drop everything now and follow him, is only to those few who are to become his traveling Disciples. For those who believe in his divinity, it is recognized that he would know their personal circumstances, and would not ask them to do anything unconscionable. Indeed he often preached of family values, and it is inconceivable that he was advocating that one desert and leave high and dry, any dependents. Jesus recognized that not all could meet the stringent demands of that calling. Leave not only your possessions, but your means of producing income, such as a fishing boat or business, and the comforts of a home, for the rigors and risks of being on the road with a controversial Rabbi.

We will see if secularist beliefs succeed in inspiring and influencing future generations for one tenth the time or to one tenth the degree, that Jesus' teachings have guided people throughout the world, for 2,000 years right up until today. I regard it as supreme arrogance for those without faith to be so dismissive of those who do.
