#17284 RE: ONEBGG #17240

News today: Chavez is threatening to cut off our oil again. Let him sell it to the chinese. The problem I have with the Bush/Cheney administration is that their only solution is to drill for more while paying scant lip service to alternatives. Here is my take on what we should be doing:
1. Mandated fuel economy for 2010 (gives the bigs a year to implement). No passenger car may be sold that gets less than thirty five miles per gallon. No full sized pickup that gets less than twenty mpg. Suvs, 25. That is a start. The bigs will tell us they can't do it, but if the gov't is firm, they can and will if they want to sell cars.
2. Streamline the process of licensing new nuclear power plants so that it takes two years to get the license, and then streamline the design and building process so that it takes less than ten years from application to on line. Any new coal or other fossil fuel plants must remove carbon from their emmisions. Old existing plants have five years to retrofit to do the same.
3. Drill in the ANWR oil fields and open up the coastal areas to exploration. This is a stop-gap solution.
4. Tax breaks for solar/wind/hydroelectric projects. We could meet five to ten percent of our need for electricity with wind alone.
5. Scrap the ethanol program as it now exists. It does no good except to raise the price for food. Devote research to other sources of biofuels, such as total cellulose conversion.
6. What the heck! Let's have a "man on the moon" type program to solve the problems of hydrogen fusion. Why not? Maybe we won't solve all the problems, but I'll bet we learn a lot that will be useful.

This is just a start. We have the most creative minds in the world here in the good old hew hess uv hay. We can do damm near anything if we put our minds to it.
