If you find yourself at the bottom of a hole with a shovel in hand, the first part of the solution is ... STOP DIGGING.

When facing complex, multi-dimensional problems, start with the parts that can be isolated and eliminated by virtue of direct/simple solution with limited or no impact on the stability of the rest of the problem, and avoid taking action in haste on what you don't.

Also helps to know and have a little humility about the bounds of your own knowledge and capabilities before engaging in "solutions".
