God chose Abraham and promised him a land (Israel, the promised land), a people, and a Savior (Jesus, of the line of David). God further narrowed the chosen line down to Isaac, then to Isaac's son, Jacob, who later was named Israel. God chose Israel when they were "the least of all peoples" and promised to make them a great people through whom all peoples would be blessed.
God later reiterated these promises to David -- both Mary and Joseph were of the line of David, Joseph passing the legal right to the throne of David (the legal right was able to be passed to an adopted son), and Mary carried the physical genes of the line of David.
Anyone who reads the history of the jews, the descendents of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, cannot come away without understanding that they are a special people.
