Au contraire my fine feathered friend:
Living "in the moment' with 4 children living at home in a house built in the twenties, I can assure you the 2000sf is not enough space. it was fine when the kids were in elementary school.
We have just added about 800sf in a master bedroom and family room to our 1980sf 4 bedroom colonial. to be frank, there is still not enough room. when the kids grow up they are bigger, have more stuff, and need more room just to live and entertain.
The real issue here is as households mature, do they need as much living space as they had when their children were around? My wife and I are struggling with the desire to have enough room for when the kids visit and the costs of ownership for a house that may exceed our needs in the future.

"PS Your opinion that houses will downsize pegs your demographics. In my circles the people under 35 all 'need' 3500 sf"

I would consider myself to be rather affluent and under 35. I don't ahve a singel friend my age who has or wants a house over 3500sq ft. Most of these upper middle class people are around 30-40 and are looking a 1000sq ft. condos and would rather be rent than live in the suburbs.

but then again, i live in San Frnacisco and the average 1000 Sq ft condo is $850,000 and the average 3500 sq ft home is about $4million.

but speaking on principle, most of my peers think the generation before us has overdone it....built too much waste, had too much greed and we are paying for it.
