The numbers you are comparing to in the U.S. are certainly pretty crazy and don't seem plausible. However, by Asian standards, Haorizi's stated goals aren't really that out of line.
In the 7-Eleven link you provided it shows that there are 11,125 stores in Japan. Based on a population of 127mm, that's about one store per 11,000 people.
In Taiwan, there is a 7-Eleven for every 4,930 people, and a convenience store for every 2,500 people:
It appears that these little shops carry far more product offerings than do our convenience stores over here, and the disparity in numbers compared to Western markets may have something to do with our increased mobility, but that is just my WAG. In other words, what is "convenience" over there is a store on every corner (sometimes directly across the street from one another), while over here there is more geography between locations.
For the comparison done for Walgreens. In pretty much every little town there is more than one drugstore. There may be an Eckerds(rite-aid) AND a Walgreens, in my town there is a CVS too. Technically one has to add all the drugstores together and divide by the population. Monopolies per se aren't permitted in the USA but may be allowed in China.
Where I reside we have all 3 drugstores, 1 more "mom-n-pop" drugstore AND a SUPER-Walmart, all in a COUNTY (not town) that has a pop of 34k. The town only has a pop. of 15k.
